Capturing Beau: The Art of Experiencing a Band for the First Time

Photos by Isabella Soares-Sousa (@litm_photos)

There’s something indescribable about going to a show alone with just me and my camera, taking in a band I’ve never heard of before. My camera captures the magic unfolding on stage while I soak in every moment like a sponge. Attending a show solo holds its own kind of beauty—the uncertainty of whether the night will be amazing or uncomfortable, with no one by your side. Sometimes, I worry people might think I’m a loner or a creep, but once I cross the bridge from Jersey to New York, those thoughts fade away, replaced with excitement about what’s to come.

Beau, short for “Before Beau,” is a band led by two sonic sisters—Heather Goldin (singer/songwriter) and Emma Jenney (guitarist/songwriter)—who’ve been making music together since they were 13. Their teenage years were filled with music and poetry, which are deeply reflected in their sound. After breaking into the indie scene, life took them in different directions, leading to a nine-year hiatus. Now, they’ve reunited to create something even more powerful. Their new album reflects years of growth, and the tracks they’ve already released demonstrate just how much they’ve evolved.

Attending concerts and then trying to describe that intense, freeing feeling is always a challenge—how do you put that kind of magic into words? Last week, I saw Beau perform, and it wasn’t even a show I had planned on attending, but I was fortunate enough to capture the night. There’s something thrilling about seeing a band for the first time—it’s like piecing together a puzzle until the full image reveals itself.

Beau's live show, on a random Tuesday night in NYC, was one of those experiences that words can’t fully capture. Their authenticity, humor, and unique sound are magnetic. I hadn’t heard any of their songs before that night, but the second the drums kicked in, I was hooked. It’s rare for a band to grab me so quickly, but Beau managed to check all my internal boxes in a matter of seconds. While they played tracks from their earlier releases, the standouts were definitely from their upcoming album, set to release on October 11th. They gave us a preview, and I’m already counting down the days.

The show was more than just a performance—it felt like a warm embrace, so inviting and comforting that no one wanted to leave its grasp. Beau, accompanied by Joshua Rouah on bass, Miles Spillane on drums, and Ludwig Persik on guitar, came together to create something truly special. Heather Goldin radiated energy, moving and flowing with each lyric as if she herself could become a soundwave, while Emma Jenney, Joshua Rouah, Miles Spillane, and Ludwig Persik played every note with precision. The synergy between them brought a palpable energy to the room that everyone felt.

At one point, Heather Goldin stepped off the stage to hug fans in the crowd, gently singing and dancing with them. I’ve never seen anything like it before. In an era where artists often dive into crowds to surf or mosh, this soft, tender interaction was refreshing and captivating. I couldn’t help but smile the entire time. Even after the show ended, the energy in the room lingered, buzzing in the air long after they left the stage.

Beau has a sound that makes you feel seen, heard and welcomed. If you’re into artists like Dora Jar, Suki Waterhouse, or The Beaches, you’re bound to fall in love with them. A huge thank you to Beau and their team for allowing me to be part of such a memorable night. Be sure to keep an eye out for their new album on October 11th. In the meantime, dive into their available tracks—you won’t be disappointed! I’m excited to see what lies ahead for them. Congratulations, Beau!
